Most medical plans do not include adult dental or vision, which surprises people at the worst possible moment. These are inexpensive policies that pay for themselves quickly if anyone in your household needs regular care, glasses, or major dental work.

Preventive care — cleanings, exams, x-rays — is usually covered at or near a hundred percent, because carriers would rather pay for a cleaning than a root canal. Basic work like fillings sits in the middle, and major work like crowns, bridges, and dentures is covered at a lower percentage. Nearly every plan has an annual maximum, and it is lower than people expect.

Vision plans are simple: an annual exam, an allowance toward frames or contacts, and a discount on lenses. If anyone in your household wears glasses, the math usually works out in your favor. If nobody does, it is reasonable to skip it.
