Private Health Insurance

Off-exchange individual and family health plans bought directly from the carrier.

Private health plans are bought directly from an insurance company rather than through the MNsure marketplace. They are the right answer for some households and the wrong one for others, and the deciding factor is almost always whether you qualify for a premium tax credit.

If your household income is high enough that you would not receive a premium tax credit, you are paying full price either way — and off-exchange plans sometimes offer networks or plan designs the marketplace does not carry. You also are not tied to open enrollment windows in the same way for certain products.

  • Individual and family major medical plans
  • HSA-compatible high-deductible options
  • Short-term and gap coverage
  • Network checks against your current doctors
  • Coverage after losing an employer plan
  • Side-by-side comparison against MNsure options
  • Honest subsidy eligibility check first

If you would qualify for a subsidy, buying off-exchange means voluntarily paying more than you have to, because premium tax credits only exist on the marketplace. This is the single most common expensive mistake we see. Before you buy anything private, it is worth five minutes to check. That check is free and we will tell you honestly if MNsure is the better answer.

Networks vary more than premiums do. A plan that looks twenty dollars cheaper is a bad trade if your clinic is out of network. Tell us who you see and we will check before you commit.

Buying directly from a carrier instead of through MNsure does not get you a different calendar. Any plan that counts as real major medical follows the same annual window, on or off the marketplace. Short-term and limited-benefit products can be bought year-round, but they are not the same kind of coverage — ask us what you would be giving up before treating one as a way around a missed deadline.

You'll work with Pat or Spencer directly

Pat and Spencer are the agents here, so whoever quotes private health insurance is the same person who answers when you call about it later. No call centers, no getting handed off, no explaining your situation twice. They'll work closely with you from the first question through every renewal after it.

Would rather not fill in a form? Call Pat directly at 952-457-5894 and give him your information over the phone. It takes about the same amount of time, and plenty of people prefer it — you're welcome to do it that way.
